Malibu Beach Engagement Session: Josh & Brandon

Josh and Brandon are the sweetest people. They got engaged on the beach, so they wanted to be next to the ocean for their engagement photos too. We chose a quintessential stretch of rocky Malibu coastline just north of Los Angeles and they dressed to impress in black and white suits.

These two smiled every time they looked each other’s way.

I loved Brandon’s red shoes with the suit look. They were such a fun detail.

Southern California has the best sunsets. I love how they soften as they reach the distant horizon over the ocean.

These matching black-striped engagement/wedding rings are so cool! Especially when paired with their suits!

Someone later pointed out to me that the clouds between them were shaped like a heart. I didn’t see it as I shot it but I see it instantly now. I can’t help but think this is a sign that the universe brought these two together.

Venice Beach Engagement Shoot: Aislinn & Pete
When people think Venice Beach, they tend to think of street vendors, performers on the sidewalk, and graffiti. But just a little south near Venice Beach Boardwalk, there's a gorgeous, far less-crowded beach perfect for photos. Aislinn and Pete were such a fun couple and with their playful attitude really made for a great session.

But just a little south near Venice Beach Boardwalk, there's a gorgeous, far less-crowded beach perfect for photos. Aislinn and Pete were such a fun couple and with their playful attitude really made for a great session.

We started off on the pier, and for once the wind was actually working in my favor. It swept up her hair perfectly for this shot.

I loved the look of this mountainous sand dune next to the pier, so I asked them to hop up on there. These ended up being some of my favorite shots of the day.

I've always loved a good under-the-pier shot. I don't really know why they're so romantic and appealing, but I made sure to stop under the Venice Boardwalk to get a few while we were there.

It's a little crazy to me that I live in a place where this is what winter looks like. It was sunny and warm all day for this shoot. (I even thought I should have considered wearing shorts!)

This moment was really perfect. The sun was in the right spot, there were a few light clouds in the distance, and you could see sailboats on the horizon. Everything just came together.

This is one of those great reasons to wear comfortable clothes and be ready to try strange poses during a photo session. Every once and a while your photographer is going to ask you to sit on a rock or climb something or lay in the grass. These two were so easygoing and there to have a good time, so every pose worked flawlessly.

This is one of my all-time favorite photos. The lighting and the wind were perfect and you can just feel something special between these two here.

Malibu Engagement Shoot: Katelyn & Brian

Winter is perfect weather for a beach shoot. That probably sounds odd, but it's true. Cloudy skies make sunsets colorful and more dramatic, the beach is less crowded, and you can get great, diffused light for portraits. When Katelyn and Brian suggested El Matador State Beach, I knew it would be a great choice.

Katelyn and Brian mentioned to me that they'd really like some sunset photos, but it wasn't quite time for sunset yet. An easy way around that was to use the reflection of the sun on the water to create the same effect.

These two brought along a lot of props, which are always a fun opportunity to get creative. Here, they wrapped themselves up in a blanket.

The shoot was going so quickly that we had some time to get creative by drawing in the sand. It took a couple tries though, because the waves kept washing it away.

El Matador beach is full of cliffs and caves, so we took a moment to explore.

As the sun finally started to set, we took advantage of the gorgeous skies for some last-minute shots. They turned out to be some of the best of the day.
